From The CriticsReviewer: Sandra A. Pezzoli, RN, BSN, MScN (Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing)
Description: This is a second edition pocket guide that offers the reader basic, important elements of cultural assessments.
Purpose: The purpose is to familiarize the healthcare practitioner with other cultures. It is needed at this time of increased travel between nations and increased immigration in the United States. The author meets these objectives.
Audience: I believe that while this was written for healthcare practitioners, students could also benefit from the information. The author is a credible expert.
Features: The author covers numerous ethnic groups. This book is extremely easy to read and information is available at a glance. Appendix maps are hard to read. It could be improved by using the same categories consistently in each country covered.
Assessment: This pocket guide is a valuable tool for the healthcare professional. It is important to acquaint oneself with new cultures while practicing. I found "touch practices," and "birth and death rituals" to be especially instructive. This guide is less cumbersome than other cultural texts for nurses.
