Description: The book provides a succinct overview of diseases encountered by students and practitioners of radiation oncology with an appropriate focus on radiotherapeutic management.
Purpose: The book was conceived as a brief overview of radiotherapeutic management of a wide range of diseases. The objective is to provide residents and practitioners a resource that can aid in a quick review of key points in management of disease sites for which they are not familiar or rarely encounter. The book is for the most part successful in meeting its objectives and therefore helps fill an important niche.
Audience: The book should be useful to residents and attending radiation oncologists in a busy clinic looking for a quick overview of a topic. It is perhaps most suitable as a companion in clinic for medical students interested in pursuing a career in radiation oncology.
Features: Each chapter provides a brief overview of work-up, treatment (by stage as applicable), technical considerations, and selected key studies. The very short chapters, generally 4 to 6 pages, provide a quick read of many important points in management of the disease. By their nature and intent, the chapters have a number of omissions, for which interested readers will need to access more comprehensive book to ensure the complexity of each topic is fully addressed and understood.
Assessment: This is a valuable addition to the literature in radiation oncology. Students likely will find the book of greatest utility, although even busy practitioners encountering patients with diseases they seldom see will find the book useful. Residents already familiar with the basics of the field will benefit from seeking out more comprehensive literature on subjects of interest.
