Description: This fourth edition, spiral-bound, pocket-sized book is a guide for radiology technologists and technology students.
Purpose: The purpose of the guide is to outline appropriate patient positioning for standard radiographic views.
Audience: The intended audience is radiologic technologists.
Features: This guide contains forms for quick reference to technique (exposure charts) for technologists to complete for their particular equipment. It does have some nice features, including references to more complete descriptions in books. The guide also contains minimal hints on computed radiography technique. Another new feature is a student competency check-off. Unfortunately, this book only partially meets the author's objectives. The photographs of patient positioning are, for the most part, correct. However, this represents highly rudimentary information. Since there are no diagrams of what the resulting radiographs should look like, the technologist has no hint how to differentiate standard from poor positioning. In my experience, it is this judgment that is most difficult for the technologist. Therefore, this book would be greatly enhanced if there were diagrams and hints describing easy ways to recognize appropriate positioning on the x-ray.
Assessment: This guide provides a handy reference for technologists to record techniques in their clinical environment. However, if the technologist hopes to rely on it for an understanding of patient positioning and, therefore, adequacy of the resulting radiograph, they will be disappointed.
