Description: This is an easy-to-use reference for working up a case in small animal medicine. The layout is logical and the diagnostic flow charts are well done.
Purpose: While veterinary medicine is anything but simple, this handy book is useful as a starting point for small animal case work-ups and management options. It certainly meets the author's objectives.
Audience: The book is written for students, interns, residents, and practitioners. It presents a condensed version of pertinent disease management information, which can certainly be researched in more detail in other books, making the author's format quite useful in the clinical setting. The author is a recognized specialist in small animal medicine, which is evident in the organization of the book.
Features: The handbook begins with general health considerations and a variety of disease processes in small animals. The organization of the book, including the diagnostic flow charts and bullet points of key concepts, make it very easy to find applicable information on a given veterinary case and to begin to develop a management plan. The color diagrams are well done and useful. As with any listing of medications, it is up to readers to apply current label uses and restrictions as the information in a book can quickly become outdated.
Assessment: This is a very nice pocket reference on small animal medicine for veterinary students, interns, residents, and practitioners. As intended by the author, it fulfills the role as a starting point to diagnose and begin case management in a variety of disease processes.
