Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Martin C. Yorath, DPM (Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science)
Description: This book in the Pocket Podiatry Guide series attempts to give an overview of what perhaps could be more appropriately termed "podopediatrics." In structure and overall layout, it follows the format of other titles in this series, and in that regard it is easy enough to use.
Purpose: While podopediatrics is a worthy topic in itself, this book has missed some important areas.
Audience: This book is clearly aimed at students, and although Dr. Evans informs us that it also may have a broader audience, it is probably of limited value to practicing clinicians. However, that said, the author is a respected researcher and clinician in the field of lower extremity pediatrics.
Features: The book is broadly divided into three areas, although that may not be immediately apparent from a glance at the contents page. Essentially, it attempts to cover pedal development and growth, several common foot disorders, and footgear, orthoses, and other forms of bracing. Throughout, Dr. Evans makes an effort to present topics, and particularly treatments, in terms of evidence-based medicine, which is encouraging. A very useful chapter contents begins each chapter, but the sequence can be confusing. For example, tarsal coalitions appear in the chapter on sport and the osteochondroses, and even then are very briefly covered; the chapter on verrucae could have been more useful if expanded to cover common pediatric dermatologic conditions affecting the lower extremities. Conversely, chapter one, on consulting with children, is original and useful.
Assessment: While there is a place for this book, its usefulness is somewhat limited by the brief coverage of topics. Although it is intended as a pocket guide, and the author points that it is not meant as a definitive guide and suggests further reading, my experience is that students, regrettably, do not follow this advice. An interesting book, but of moderate value.
