This is a true story of childhood in the Philippines during World War II, told by a child of an interracial marriage. Author Biography: Barbara-Ann Gamboa Lewis was born in Manila, Philippines. Her formal schooling was interrupted by World War II when the Philippines was captured and occupied by the Japanese Army. Ultimately, she earned her B.S. degree in Chemistry, and her Ph.D. in Soil Science, and is now on the faculty at Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering. She has three grown children and four grandchildren. She believes that children everywhere will identify with some of the experiences of the biracial child in this story, and thus relate better to children from different cultural backgrounds.
