Overview

When a family gathers to welcome the arrival of a new baby and commit themselves to the child’s future welfare and happiness, the occasion calls for a few well-chosen words. Now finding the perfect selection is easy, thanks to this collection of poems and prose readings. There’s something here for every taste—from the Psalms of King David to the songs of Bob Dylan, from a Navajo blessing to a poem by Emily Dickinson—each one a unique expression of parents’ and godparents’ universal feelings of hope, pride, and joy.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This curious little anthology, a sequel of sorts to the publisher's Poems and Readings for Weddings and Civil Partnerships, draws together a dizzyingly wide array of quotations from the likes of Bob Dylan, Sri Chinmoy, Louisa May Alcott, David McCord, Spike Milligan, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and the Psalms for harvesting and use in christenings and naming ceremonies. VERDICT While the entries are thoughtful, the only organizational principle is alphabetical, and this leaves the innocent reader to figure out unaided how each reading might be used in ceremony. A good resource for the spiritual leader but perhaps incomplete for the layperson.
