Gr 3-6-- One thing is clear from this collection: grandmothers come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and colors. And there are just as many different kinds of poems to celebrate them. This book includes 18 poems, 14 of which were specially commissioned. Many of the notable poets included, such as Lucille Clifton and X. J. Kennedy, have also contributed to Livingston's Poems for Mothers (1988) and Poems for Fathers (1989, both Holiday.) With poignant and telling words and phrases, the poets continue their stories and praise of family members by introducing readers to all sorts of grandmothers--grandmothers who work in Penneys, who heat up milk in the kitchen, who work in an office, or who make gingerbread and tell stories on rainy days. Each poem is framed and set into a softly detailed pencil illustration that sets just the right mood for each. A wonderful collection for sharing among all families, no matter what kind of grandmother they have. --Jane Marino, White Plains Public Library, NY
