Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3 This collection of 45 classic poems for children includes 17 anonymous traditional rhymes as well as narrative poems by A. A. Milne, Kenneth Grahame, Edward Lear, and Lewis Carroll, among others. There is no introduction or subject arrangement that might indicate why these particular poems were selected. All are well-known, and all are included in other anthologies. The collection is set off from others of its type by the large (8'' by 11'') format and the charming color illustrations reflecting the moods of the poems. Moore's illustrations, most notably her parade of children around ``Monday's Child'' and her small, worn bear with ``Fuzzy Wuzzy,'' offer new insight into these poems. Libraries that own Prelutsky's Random House Book of Poetry for Children (Random, 1983) or other standard collections of poetry for children may find this to be extraneous, but libraries in which many children enjoy poetry books or libraries needing good brief anthologies may want to purchase this. Barbara Chatton, College of Education, University of Wyoming , Laramie
