To Solitude! Sweet solitude ! I love thy peaceful bowers, In evening's quiet and refreshing hours: When, at the close of an autumnal day, Majestic Sol darts forth a parting ray : Just when grey twilight's melancholy shades Come stealing on, as daylight slowly fades : When pensive silence reigns, nor sound is heard Except the fluttering of some startled bird. Oh, yes ! 'tis sweet to stray with those we love, When all is peace below, and calm above; When the sad moon, while clouds around her fly, In mournful grandeur, moves across the sky; Oh, then ! free from the gaudy blaze of day, 'Tis sweet to wend our solitary way, Beneath her mild and sorrow-soothing ray; To wander thro' the lone sequestered lane And hear the song of the returning swain. Yes, sacred virtue! clad in thy pure vest, Such moments to our hearts indeed are blest: Oh, then ! what soft, what sweet emotions rise! While from our hearts each wordly sorrow flies; And such a Heavenly peace pervades the mind As, Solitude! in thee alone we find. 'Tis to thy charms the anxious, care-worn, breast Flies from the storm, and finds a wished-for rest: In thee, the troubled mourner seeks relief, And strives, with tears, to wash away her grief: And Memory, too, in thy delightful hours, Rich sweets of by-gone happiness restores; And, heavenly Hope, in rich, luxuriant groves Of fancied happiness now, smiling, roves; And seems to make each wished-for joy so near, That e'en possession's self is scarce more dear.
