Overview

Dave Morice’s Poetry Comics offers literary mavens and students alike a look at the canon in a new and hilarious light. This anthology brings together such classics as Shakespeare’s sonnets, Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass,” and Emily Dickinson’s “Poem 303” with renditions of such modern masterpieces as John Ashbery’s “Some Trees,” T. S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl,” and Marianne Moore’s “Poetry.”

In addition to Morice’s kaleidoscope of cartoons, the book features a brief history of poetry comics as well as a step-by-step guide to making poetry comics at home or in the classroom.
“Tweaks the nose of poetry.”—Village Voice
“Will surely irk the hell out of professors and self-serious grad students everywhere.”—Boston Globe

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
The word cartoon, Morice reminds readers, originally meant "a full-size preliminary sketch of a design or picture to be copied in a frieze, tapestry, etc." Morice's anthology illustrates thirty-seven well-known poems, beginning with Shakespeare, moving chronologically through the likes of Blake, Dickinson, and Eliot, and ending with contemporary poets Allen Ginsberg and John Ashbery. The illustration styles vary widely, from a couple kissing on a couch in soap-opera style for Robert Herrick's "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time," to a caped superhero figure for Poe's "The Raven," and from a cloud walking on two legs in Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud," to animal characters who recite lines of Thomas Carew's "A Song." An appendix gives directions for creating poetry comics, an assignment bound to meet with approval during poetry units. As an accompaniment to the illustrated poems, Morice also offers his literary postcard book. For the educators who want to startle, annoy, or amuse their friends and colleagues, each of twenty-five postcards within is a humorous look at poetic masterpieces. Junior high and high school libraries should have this volume in their collections. The images that accompany the poems offer teachers tremendous springboards for class discussions. The humorous and different approaches of Morice's cartoons will appeal to those students who see classical poetry as too pedantic or dull, and they will spark lively discussions among the more serious students of verse. In a time when educators are trying to honor multiple learning styles, Morice's book offers a wonderful opportunity for a fresh approach to poetry. Illus. Appendix.
