Each of the 25 poems in this thoughtful collection is accompanied by stunning illustrations and short but insightful commentary. The key to the success of the collection is the engaging biography of Robert Frost preceding the poems. Frost grew up poor, working in his grandfather's mill as a bobbin boy and later as a cobbler. In order to feed his family, he farmed for 10 years and wrote poetry late at night when all the work was done. Success came slowly for Frost; he was 38 years old when his work was finally accepted for publication. This vision of the poet as an ordinary human being, struggling with the mundane trials of everyday life while creating some of the world's most treasured poems, is an inspiration for any generation. Gr 3 Up-Frost satisfies in every way; Dickinson does not. Bolin's four-page introduction describes and explains Emily Dickinson's odd life style and creative productivity. This is followed by 36 poems loosely arranged by the topics of hope, death, and poetry. This organization, however, is not readily apparent; nor is the reasoning behind defining some words (gale, bog, shanties, etc.) and not others (dimity, helmsman, countenance). An index of first lines and little else will help readers searching for poems by subject. The prettily colored watercolors are flat and stylized, and seem better suited to nursery rhymes than Dickinson's insightful and witty glimpses of an entire universe in a blade of grass or of ``paradise'' gathered by ``narrow hands.'' Frost contains a three-page overview of the poet's life, 29 poems selected and arranged around the seasons of the year, brief and apt commentaries on each, and a useful index of titles and subject matter. The realistic watercolor illustrations capture the delicate beauty of a New England spring and the glory of fall while still suggesting the around-the-corner chill of winter, a disquiet echoing throughout much of Frost's poetry.-Meg Stackpole, Rye Free Reading Room, NY

    Highly recommended! You'll want to check it out!!

    Helping to introduce Robert Frost to young people are the colorful illustrations which draw the reader in. The explanatory material will bring greater understanding and appreciation of one of America's very special poets. This volume is a splendid way to introduce Frost to the younger generation and can be enjoyed by all ages.

    Poetry for Young People

    A beautifully illlustrated book, some of the poems are not Frost's best known. Most of the poems are not typical of Frost's work. The selections make the book better suited to an intermediate grade or middle school aged student than to a young child of pre-school or primary grades. As a paperback it is not sturdy enough for young children.

    A GOOD POETRY READ

    Poetry for Young People: Robert Frost is a fantasy filled yet sophisticated book. Frost's poems are filled with many adventures. Some are weird, but in a good way. My favorite poem of his is called "Ghost House". It is my favorite poem because it uses many adjectives and it draws you toward the main idea which is a ghost might live in this old house. This book was a great introduction to poetry.

    This book is excellent for children.In fact, I have it in m school library. It contains many poems that kids can use for many things, including projects and such.

    My favorite poem

    My favorite poem is 'Ghost House'. I like the way Robert Frost describes it. My favorite paragraph would be:'The whippoorwill is coming to shout And hush and cluck and flutter about: I hear him begin far enough away Full many a time to say his say Before he arrives to say it out.
