Poetry for Young People: Robert Louis Stevensonby Robert Louis Stevenson, Frances Schoonmaker, Lucy Corvino
"A collection of 32 poems...A short introductory biography...gives an insightful glimpse into his life and how it influenced his poems....illustrations convey the poetic notion of a romantic childhood memory, with pink-cheeked children...Muted colors, rich with warm golden accents among the dominant green tone, are a peaceful accompaniment to the poems."--School Library Journal. "These poems...are colorfully illustrated and notable for their detailed brushstrokes of gentle colors. They interpret the verse in a style that is fanciful without looking too juvenile for a middle-grade audience. Younger children will find the poems and illustrations to their liking as well."--Booklist.

I have always been a fan of the Sterling poetry series but must say that the Robert Louis Stevenson collection is far and away the best of the bunch! It is, without a doubt, the illustrations that set this edition apart from the others. Lucy Corvino manages to capture the expressions of her characters, both human and animal, in a way that perfectly compliments the intent of Stevenson's poems. Kudos to Sterling for finding a uniquely talented illustrator.
Everyone with a small child should have this beautiful book. We all remember and love the Robert Louis Stevenson poems from 'A Child's Garden of Verses', and this selection is some of the most memorable. What really sets this book apart are the very special illustrations! This artist knows how to capture the world as seen through the eyes of a child. Terrific job, whoever you are, Lucy Corvino! Let's have some more books illustrated by you!
I LOVE this book--it takes me instantly back to my childhood. The poems are classics, and the illustrations bring the flavor of each poem alive. This illustrator is gifted at creating characters, both human and animal. Her pictures are humorous and mysterious, beautifully colored and full of intriguing detail--just what you want in a children's picture book. A really nice gift.
