Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Another entry in the series, "Poetry for Young People," brings some of Whitman's more well-known poems to the reader. As with all other volumes in the series, this book includes a brief biographical sketch with a picture of a middle-aged Whitman looking at the reader with his hand on his hip as if he is asking, "Don't you agree?" This volume in the series focuses on the work of an American master who gave us Leaves of Grass and the poems that brought the Civil War from the battlefield to the living rooms of the time. Though many of the poems will need explaining, the editors have included definitions of words middle grade students might not know. Teachers of middle grade and high school American History may well want to use this book alongside units on the Civil War. It would be a good companion piece to Walt Whitman: Words for America by Barbara Kerley and illustrated by Caldecott Medal winner, Brian Selznick, which uses the same photo on the cover as we find in the biography of Whitman. Whitman's poetry is always though-provoking. The choices here, from "I Hear America Singing" to when "Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed," and the ever mournful "O Captain! My Captain" should not be missed. Illustrations are for the most part average, but some, as that of the slave in chains, capture the essence of the poetry. Reviewer: Leslie Greaves Radloff
School Library Journal
Gr 5-9--An outstanding introduction to Whitman's life and work. This collection of 26 poems and excerpts from longer poems is prefaced by a biographical sketch and a description of the time period. Students will be impressed by the poet's daring departure from traditional metered and rhyming poetry. Levin guides readers into understanding the importance of Whitman's oeuvre. He introduces each selection with pertinent information about its relevance to a larger work, its relationship to Whitman's beliefs, or the symbolism within it. Words that students might find difficult are defined at the bottom of the page. Beginning with the patriotic "I Hear America Singing," the collection includes excerpts from "Song of Myself," "O Captain! My Captain!," poems from Leaves of Grass, and a variety of other selections that are thought-provoking, descriptive, and full of emotion. Burke's pastel drawings add to the feelings Levin describes, and to the emotional impact of each poem. Several illustrations are historical in nature; others reflect ordinary lives and activities of the times. Still others show Whitman's sense of the miracles and mysticism of life. This superb volume can be used to teach literature or to show a variety of poetic devices and style. Students who have been taught to appreciate poetry will enjoy it on their own.--Betty Teague, Blythe Academy of Languages, Greenville, SC

    I Also Recommend:

    Good for the classroom

This Walt Whitman children's poetry book is great for the classroom. I used this version as well as other poets from this same publisher to help my remedial freshmen students. It has great illustrations and a pick of some of Whitman's "easier" poems. "I Sing the Body Electric" is not in the book neither is "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd" which are two of Whitman's best poems but nonetheless the books is still a very good educational tool and a great way to introduce Whitman or poetry in general to a younger demographic.
