All Music Guide - Steve Leggett
Bobby Womack bills himself as The Last Soul Man, a title he has earned every right to wear. A fine songwriter and tasteful guitarist who possesses a strong, gritty voice, he has been turning out his brand of urban gospel-soul for more than 40 years, beginning with the single "Lookin' for a Love" in 1962. Imagine the powerful voice of a Wilson Pickett coupled with the subtle grace of a Marvin Gaye or Sam Cooke, Womack's mentor and add Curtis Mayfield on guitar, and you get the recipe for The Last Soul Man. That Womack is still relatively unknown to the general public is baffling, since his body of work stands up to any in the pop-soul arena.
