Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
{Longley's} exemplary poet is Edward Thomas. Longley is probably Thomas'most able advocate and she brings out how much he achieved in the three yearshe wrote poetry. But I doubt that Thomas can carry the weight of importance that Longley wants him to bear. . . . The tension between a commitment to poetry and the loyalties imposed by a state of war links the essays collected in Poetry in the Wars. Writing from Northern Ireland Longley knows about the murderous power of political mythologies and she admires poets like Paul Muldoon whose oblique and parodic strategies can keep the power of these myths at bay.Poetry becomes an art of peace in the midst of war, or an art which can at least anticipate peace. However, Longley seems to see any political commitment as inevitably narrowing imagination, and this produces strangely foreshortenedreadings of the work of Seamus Heaney and Tom Paulin. . . . Such lapses are rare, though, in a book which is full of powerful arguments for the distinct strengths of poetry in modern culture.
