Poinsettia and the Firefighters

Overview

Poinsettia can't believe her ears — she's finally getting a room of her own! Yet once night falls, and her new room is dark, Poinsettia is lonely and scared. Radiators clank, stairs creak, branches scratch, and something thumps. She can't wait for morning to arrive. But when she sees a bright light shining outside her window in the middle of the night, Poinsettia's quick thinking saves her neighborhood, and, with the help of the firefighters, she realizes that the night isn't so...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The endearing heroine of Poinsettia and Her Family is back, afraid of strange noises in the middle of the night that could lead to genuine disaster. Ages 4-8. (March)
Publishers Weekly
In Poinsettia and the Firefighters by Felicia Bond, Poinsettia is excited to be getting a room of her own. But she can't sleep because it's too dark. Despite her fears, her quick thinking saves the neighborhood from a fire. PW called Poinsettia "an endearing heroine," when the book was first published in 1984. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Poinsettia, the adorable pig heroine of Poinsettia and her Family, is thrilled to have her very own bedroom in the attic—at least until nighttime, when the clanks and peeps and creaks of an old house, coupled with the darkness, bring out her fears of being alone and keep her from falling asleep. On this night, however, Poinsettia's sleeplessness turns her into a heroine when she discovers a fire outside. Discovering that there is a firefighter awake and on guard all night provides Poinsettia with the reassurance she needs to ignore all the noises and sleep. This gentle story may help soothe young children with similar fears; the fire is sufficiently distant from the house (on a power line) to prevent new fears from taking hold. Children familiar with Bond's work through Laura Joffe Numeroff's "If you give a . . ." series will recognize her style and welcome the reissue of this 1984 book, which still seems fresh today. 2003 (1984), Laura Geringer Books/HarperCollins, Ages 3 to 6.
