Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The famous little puppy is now bigger and better! The classic tale of the pooch who likes to take his time -- along with digging holes and gobbling down desserts -- is now reformatted in this livelier larger size. Included in the Big Little Golden Books series and always a first-rate addition to storytimes, The Poky Little Puppy looks even more adorable and will charm the socks off old fans and young readers.
Publishers Weekly
Random House launches Big Little Golden Books with a quartet of vintage titles in a new, larger trim size. First published in 1942, The Poky Little Puppy by Janette Sebring Lowrey, illus. by Gustaf Tenggren, stars a curious canine who just can't keep up with the pack. In Scuffy the Tugboat by Gertrude Crampton, illus. by Tibor Gergely, Scuffy sets out to see the world but soon decides to go back where he belongs-the bathtub. It's springtime in Margaret Wise Brown's Home for a Bunny (1956), illus. by Garth Williams, and a brown rabbit looks for a place to live. After interviewing other animals about their abodes ("I would fall out of a nest," he explains to the robin), he finally finds the right match. In The Fuzzy Duckling (1949), a counting book by Jane Werner Watson, illus. by Alice and Martin Provensen, a baby duck meets other animals including "two frisky colts," and "six lively lambs/ with thick soft fleece," but none will join him for a walk through the woods.
Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
Hooray! The Golden Books are back! The much loved picture books from the 1950s return with their classic stories and distinctive gold spines. They are, however, slightly abridged in their new board format because-as any experienced caretaker knows all too well that board books can only grow so big before they become lethal weapons. The volume in hand is a favorite story about five little puppies who like to dig holes under fences to roam in "the wide, wide world." Only four little puppies ever get punished, though, because the fifth one is so slow he cannot keep up with his littermates. That means he misses the bedtime punishments, arriving just in time to eat up all the puddings and custards-except for the day he is found out. What a sorry sight to see the poky pup's comeuppance! Toddlers may learn a lesson from the pup's experience. They will also enjoy counting up to almost five, not to mention Tenggren's enticing clouds and toads and other poky-causing creatures. Even abridged, there still remains quite a lot of good story for parents and toddlers to enjoy in this reissue. Reviewer: Kathleen Karr

I bought this for my 2yr old son because it was one of my favorites as a child. He does not care for it as much as I did but I still give it a five.

    So Cute!

I read this to a 2 year from my nook and from my laptop. He just loves it. I don't think he understands it yet but loves the pictures. Just remember that if you have a nook it with not be in color. But it is on my laptop. He likes it either way. The story is about a puppy that is lagging behind the rest of the puppies and how he gets rewarded for it at first but in the end it gets him in trouble. They keep sneaking out of the yard and not getting dessert because of it. Very cute book with a lesson in it.

The Poky Little Puppy is another Little Golden Book and Gustaf T

The Poky Little Puppy is another Little Golden Book and Gustaf Tenggren overlap, so, of course, I had to buy it.  Also, I had a copy of this book when I was a child, so it is always fun to revisit some aspects of childhood.
I'm not quite sure what the lesson/moral of this story is.  Maybe it's just that puppies don't read very well.  Maybe it is that it pays to be poky if you want rice pudding or chocolate custard, but it doesn't pay to be poky if you want strawberry shortcake.  Maybe it's just that puppies don't listen to their mother any better than little boys do.  Whatever the lesson/moral, this book is adorable because of Tenggren's artwork.

A constant hit in an ever-changing world!

This lowly little "golden book" is a classic in every sense of the word. It has been around long before I experienced it and I am 71! I loved it. My daughter who is 33 loved it. We are counting on her daughter who is just over 1 month loving it as well.

The story line is instructive. The illustrations are simple and charming. The main character, the pokey little puppy, is prone to doing this his way and ultimately suffering the consequences of doing something "naughty" but forgiven of course. The rhyming and repetitive csdence is forever appreciated by those reading or listening to it....."tumble, bumble, pell mell...." and lifetime phrases that are just simple fun.

An investment in a "hard cover" is not going to break the bank for anyone and still a faorite format that is an option with the golden book publishers, thank goodness. Most other popular or newcomers in the hardbook format suggest an "investment" passed over if the choice of a fresh paperback is possible due to expense despite the past preference for gifting yourself or others with "hard cover."

You need not be poky about this purchase!

    My favorite book about puppies!

I like Poky LIttle Puppy because he eats treats and comes home later when his mommy is asleep. And that's all.

    A favorite classic!!

I still remember my mother reading this book to my younger brother over fifty years ago! It is a wonderful story with a great lesson for children. It is also an engaging little story for both children and adults and remains one of my favorite children's books. I purchased it for my children when they were young and I just purchased it for my niece.

She has a dog and can see how this little puppy is just like her dog as a baby. It does teach why children should listen to their parents in a very gentle manner. The illustrations are as cute as I remember them and this is certainly a book that should be on every young child's bookshelf. Be prepared to read the story again and again. I guarantee you will love it, whether you are reading it for the first time or the thousandth! Enjoy!! :)

My three boys loved this story and read it over and over again.

This is a simple story but little children love it. My boys read it so many times they memorized it. We named our puppy Pokey because of this book and our boys loved that dog!

One of the best children's books ever

My mom read this book to me when I was small, I read it to my four children and now I am purchasing it again to read to my five grandchildren! This one is, and always has been, a "keeper". Kids love this book. They can't wait to see what the puppy will do next. They also learn a lesson at the end. It is very appealing to the children. It still appeals to me and I'm a grandma! Great book.

I taught myself to read with Pokey Little Puppy and other Little Golden Books; it is a classic.

This is one of the first books I learned to read over 60 years ago. The story and the illustrations are wonderful. I bought it because I am making a quilt with the new line of fabrics from the book and will give the book with the quilt. My daughters and grandsons also enjoyed this book when they were small. It is timeless.
