Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Like many nature-themed books before it, this slender title chooses to follow a mother and her young in the seasons immediately following birth. Here, the mother is Polar Bear and her young are a pair of twin cubs. The cubs are born in December, and this book traces their journey through spring and summer, until the arrival of another winter leads them to hunker down in a den once more. As the days pass, the cubs grow at an amazing rate (from one pound at birth to twenty-five at four months) and learn about survival from their mother. Meanwhile, Polar Bear cares for her young—leading them, protecting them, nursing them, and, yes, teaching them to hunt the tasty seals that are the core of their diet. Adrian Chesterman's illustrations show the fierce mammal in all of its powerful glory. This is part of the Smithsonian Oceanic Collection, which is geared towards raising environmental awareness in young readers. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green
