Children's Literature - Keri Collins Lewis
A polar bear mother and her twin cubs wait patiently beside a hole in the ice until an unfortunate seal peaks out of the water and becomes the bears' meal. Survival is the story of life and death in the snowy ranges of the world's largest carnivore. Orr gives young readers tangible comparisons to help them understand the incredible physical size of polar bears. For example, she explains that when polar bears stand up, they are tall enough to look into a basketball hoop. Chapter two explains how polar bears survive in the cold, and includes fun facts about polar bears' tremendous swimming abilities, excellent sense of smell, and hunting skills. Chapter three discusses how female polar bears prepare to give birth and raise babies—that are about the size of squirrels when they are bornin such a cold environment. Chapter four begins with information on the evolution of bears and explains how scientists use fossils to draw conclusions about polar bears' ancestors. Interesting information about different types of bears, including a new hybrid bear that is the product of a grizzly bear father and a polar bear mother, rounds out this chapter. Chapter five addresses the threats of overhunting and global warming. This book contains the traditional nonfiction book elements: table of contents, glossary, and index, as well as a map and a fact file page. While the "Nature's Children" series on the whole is solid, this title stands out for its engaging tone, interesting facts, and examples that relate to young readers' existing knowledge.
