Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

Gr 4-6
Young explorers and science enthusiasts will dig into these fact-filled books, and the high-interest content will fascinate them from cover to cover. Two-page sections offer an overview of basic information, introduce the survival challenges humans face when exploring the environment, and discuss topics specific to the habitat. Intriguing chapter headings like "Monsters of the Deep" (Ocean ) and "The Wildest Winds" (Polar Regions ) will keep readers turning the pages. The last five spreads are entitled "Fact Files" and deal with the plants and animals unique to the book's habitat and people's relationship with the environment. Global warming, the increasing size of the world's deserts, and the pollution and overfishing of the oceans are all presented, along with examples of countermeasures being taken to protect the environment. A highly graphic layout adds to the books' appeal. Full-color photo bleeds provide the background for many pages, and captioned photos, maps, graphs, charts, and boxes with "Survival Tips" are scattered across each spread. Sidebars designed to look like notebook pages include two or three kid-friendly facts per topic. (If you never believed eggs can fry on a hot rock, see Desert Survival .) Turn youngsters onto these books and they'll come away with a new respect for the world we live in.
