Editorial Reviews

Midwest Book Review
The artwork is of museum quality and the imaginative and magical story is utterly charming. Polar Slumber/ Sueño polar is very highly recommended.
Fearless Reviews
Polar Slumber / Sueño polar... is told without words, except for the image-rich poem at the end. Beautiful full-color pictures illustrate main ideas, while smaller black-and-white thumbnails show the sequence of events down the margins of the pages. The artistic style is quite eye-catching, full of lacey, nubbly textures and vivid colors. This is a perfect book for young children of either or both languages, pre-reading or early reading age; use it to encourage storytelling techniques and get them talking about the book.
Heartland Reviews
This [Polar Slumber / Sueño polar] is a very interesting interactive picture book–interactive between the child and the adult reader. The child’s imagination is brought into play and his interpretations of the pictures are discussed...We rated this book four hearts.
The Loft Reader
Rockhill’s richly textured and dreamlike renderings tell the story of a young girl and her stuffed polar bear-in a way that will take ‘reader’ of all ages’ breath away. With textures and detailing reminiscent of Jan Brett and a tone like that of The Polar Express...Oh heck, why wait until Christmas??
Midwest Book Review
Dennis Rockhill's Polar Slumber/Sueño polar is virtually unique as a completely wordless picturebook that tells the wonderfully entertaining story of a sleepy little girl, a backyard snow bear, and a dreaming fantasy of a journey together through frozen landscapes and exotic creatures. All of which fade away with the coming of morning. The artwork is of museum quality and the imaginative and magical story is utterly charming. Polar Slumber/Sueño polar is very highly recommended, especially for children preschool through first grade.
Children's Literature
In pastel shades of blue, white, and brown, Rockhill captures our imagination with exquisitely detailed drawings of a mittened child patting a baby seal in the Artic. The child builds a polar bear out of snow, and as she looks out the window the polar bear comes to life. She dreams and her own little white teddy bear becomes a snow bear's cub and all three travel on an adventure. They meet a snowy owl, an Arctic wolf, pat a baby seal, have a tumble in the snow and see the aurora borealis. All of this happens without words. Falling asleep while it is still snowing, the child wakes to find the footsteps of the bears leading off into the whiteness. The author/illustrator includes an instruction sheet in Spanish and English to explain the small black and white pictures on each page intended to add questions a teacher might ask to help a child elaborate on the events of the adventure. This is a perfect book for teachers and parents wishing to help build storytelling vocabularies. 2004, Raven Tree Press, Ages 4 up.

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-A sweater-clad youngster builds a snow polar bear in this nearly wordless book. That night, as she sleeps, the sculpture and her white teddy come to life. After a nightlong frolic with a number of polar animals, she awakes in the morning, teddy in arms, in her own bed. Of her snow bear, nothing remains-but the footprints leading away from the spot where he sat certainly give an equivocal message about reality. The colored-pencil illustrations in white, gray, and ice blue are spellbinding, rendering changes in an almost Escherlike manner. The sense of volume, form, and texture is beautifully wrought in artwork that spills across the spreads, leaving only the right margin of the recto open. Small black-and-white drawings in that margin propel the action forward. Given the artistic excellence of the production and the clear child appeal, the detailed English/Spanish instructions to parents for use of the book (amounting to a veritable lesson plan) and the appended poem seem to be nothing other than shallow excuses for marketing the book as bilingual. No parent needs to be told how to approach this book with a child, and the shallow prose poem in no way measures up to the spell created by the art. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
