Overview

Following on his phenomenally popular Around the World in 80 Days, former Monty Python star Michael Palin and a dauntless BBC crew discover new challenges in longitudinally from North Pole to South Pole, through 17 countries (and a few revolutions). Along the way he joins a kissing dance in Novgorod, pans (successfully) for gold in Norway, shoots white-water rapids on the Zambesi, buys a camel, consults a witch doctor, and, of course, stands on both poles. Palin's curiosity, openness, and wry wit make the journey a delight for fans and armchair travelers alike.

Palin's text is fascinating for his warm, witty comments on other cultures, for his first hand viewing of dramatic political events and his wry commentary on his own adventures while traveling longitudinally from the North Pole to the South Pole. Includes hundreds of photos. The program Pole to Pole will be re-broadcast nationally on PBS in April 1995.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The ultimate travel adventure of the jet age may be to journey from the North Pole to the South Pole by every means but airplane. British actor-writer-TV producer Palin (a member of the Monty Python troupe) rose to the challenge in 1991, when he and a BBC-TV crew undertook a five-month trip along the 30 east line of longitude. Through 17 countries they traveled by bus, train, barge, ship, bicycle, car, balloon and raft; when prearranged transport failed them in the last leg of their journey, from South Africa to Antarctica, there was nothing for it but to take a plane. While the sheer mechanics of getting from one place to the next occupied most of the time, Palin vividly reports on the almost daily changes in panorama and the acutely experienced differences in climate, culture, politics, plumbing, lodgings, food and mores. He recoups the keen sense of fun--and of trauma--during the days of this Grand Tour. The narrative is witty and Palin's exuberance contagious. Crew photographer Basil Pao illustrates with a profusion of seductive color shots. (May)

FOLLOW THE ADVENTURES OF MICHAEL PALIN

Being a Monty Python fan, I have I would have loved to follow Michael Palin on this challenging journey. The book is so good because it really gives you an insight of what Michael had to face. From the North Pole to the South Pole Michael talks about his travels, the people he meets, and some of the unfortunate problems such as his broken rib. The pictures are absolutly spectacular and to me nothing says it all better than a picture. I would highly recommend this book. I also got this book signed by Michael Palin recently and I will always treasure it for years to come.
