Political Campaigns details the history, changeability, and growth of the United States' presidential campaign process. Tracking the nomination of both republican and democratic candidates, the primary processes of parties, the national conventions, and the actual election, this book offers a brief overview of a massive topic. Defining often confusing terms including: the notion of an electoral college, distinguishing caucus versus primary, and popular vote verses the electoral vote, this book offers brevity and clarity. Laced with historical facts surrounding presidential elections, including a list of presidents and their parties, this text depicts and details the two party system and details the attempts of third party candidates to win the white house, including the failed attempts by Ross Perot and Ralph Nader. This book follows the history of the presidency and documents how every election cycle becomes more expensive, more time consuming, and more theatrical. However, the title Political Campaigns is deceiving, as the word choice leads one to believe that various elected government officials' campaign processes would be addressed; this is untrue. A more apt title for this book is "Presidential Campaigns." Additionally, many facts concerning the election process are muted; this text only briefly covers fundraising, and the impact of television and the Internet vis-a-vis the attack ad. Completely omitted/ignored from this book is the significance of gerrymandering, voter suppression, (through the photo ID laws which disproportionately affect the minority and elder votes who do not have driver's licenses) and the notion of fear mongering. Additionally, with thehistorical impact Barack Obama in the 2009 elections, printing should have been delayed to detail the significance of a successful African American presidential campaign.
