Overview

Excerpt from The Political Conspiracies Preceding the Rebellion: Or the True Stories of Sumter and Pickens

"O Conspiracy!
Sham'st thou to show thy dangerous brow by night,
When evils are most free? Oh! then, by day
Where wilt thou find a cavern dark enough
To mask thy monstrous visage? Seek none, Conspiracy;
Hide it in smiles and affability:
For if thou put thy native semblance on,
Not Erebus itself were dim enough
To hide thee from prevention." Julius Cæsar.

I Purpose in this monograph to give an account of the political conspiracies immediately preceding the Rebellion of 1861 against the authority of the National Government of the United States of America.

It would be absurd to assume that one of the greatest civil wars of modern times was the result of conspiracies.

The causes which led to it were far too deep and strong to be controlled by the machinations of politicians.
