Solimano aims to understand the connection between political systems and economics in the Andean region of Latin America, made up of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. US and Latin American contributors present multi-country studies and studies of the individual countries since the 1980s in historical context; they are concerned with the effects of political crises and turmoil, economic inequality, and illegal activities. The first part of the collection has chapters that compare the countries politically and economically. Contributors are economists and one is the former president of Ecuador.
