Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
Sadly, in our present era, when people think about politicians they generally conjure up images of distrust. One need only consider national controversies involving political leaders in order to understand why approval ratings of politicians are so low. Yet, at the many levels of national, state, and local governance that exist there are innumerable men and women who selflessly serve the greater good. The world of politics and the qualities of positive politicians are the subject addressed in this selection from the "Careers with Character" series. To do justice to her subject writer Ellyn Sanna addresses not only the logistical, experiential, and monetary factors involved in running for office but also the inner traits necessary for success as a public figure. As is the case with other books in this thoughtful series, Politician discusses qualities such as integrity, ethics, values, diligence, and community mindedness in relationship to being successful in this line of work. Along the way Sanna includes values clarification scenarios, quotations from public figures, and resource information linked to successful leadership as tools for the reader to more deeply investigate their personal considerations of potential public service. All of these approaches work and result in a valuable tool for career awareness and deeper thought. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
