Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ellen R. Braaf
Even before there were elections, there were political parties. This is evidenced by the emergence of the Federalists and Anti-Federalists who fought over the ratification of the Constitution. Although a two-party system has dominated the American political landscape during the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the parties and their platforms have changed. This book is a brief overview that traces the roots of the modern Democratic and Republican Parties and looks at the emergence, evolution, and demise of political parties in the past. In an issue-based chronology, Morin uses the presidential elections as stepping stones through the parties' history. She talks about the impact of war, economic factors, and social issues on their platforms. Third parties and their influence on the two-party system, as well as changes in campaign financing, the decline in voter turnout, and the effects of television on election campaigns are also explored.
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Morin traces the history of political parties in the United States, explaining how they both influenced and were affected by the issues and events of American history. She describes the evolution of our two-party system from its birth in the factionalism that surrounded the ratification of the Constitution to the present. This focus on the two-party structure provides the framework to discuss how some parties, such as the Federalists and Whigs, declined and became defunct as political conditions changed, and how others, including our modern Republicans and Democrats, responded to conditions and have changed dramatically over time. Third parties are also addressed, from the Know-Nothings to Ross Perot's Reform Party, explaining their formations and the ways the two major parties absorbed some of their ideas and platforms. The author concludes that a party system is necessary to the operation of our political system. The readable text places political history into the larger context of American history, and usually provides enough background to ensure readers' understanding. Unfortunately, there is no list for further reading geared to this audience. Black-and-white political cartoons with explanatory captions show readers how cartoons have changed over the years. Although this book will not draw much of a general audience, it is more detailed than Edmund Lindop's Political Parties (21st Century, 1996), making it an additional purchase for libraries in need of report material on this topic.-Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
