Editorial Reviews

Booknews
From Abraham Lincoln ("The Momentous Issue of Civil War") to Senator Jefferson Davis ("Pulling Down the Temple"), Marshall (political science, Florida Atlantic U.) presents a dozen late antebellum Senate speeches exemplifying differing views on the questions of national identity and the right of self-government in the party platforms of the 1860 election. Sen. Andrew Johnson (Tennessee) chided both North and South for pursuing policies detrimental to their respective long-term interests. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
