Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Melissa Rife
Kirsty and Rachel can't wait to begin a trip with their Explorers troupe into the woods. They know that for them, this will be more than just a regular trip, because they have recently become friends with the fairies that populate the woods. They also know that they will have to keep an eye out for the goblins who lurk around, trying to ruin any party and steal the fairies' magic party bags. Sure enough, once the fun begins, Kirsty and Rachel discover that a goblin has stolen the party bag from Polly the Party Fun Fairy. By turning into fairies themselves and chasing him down, the two girls help Polly to retrieve her party bag and to go back to having a good time. The story is cute, but the problem with it is that it seems underdeveloped. Many details are left unexplained, such as what a magic party bag really is. It is never really explained. As well, there is no depth given to any of the characters. Who is Polly really and what does she do? What does it mean to be a Party Fun Fairy? Although this is a book for young readers, there could still be more background information on who the characters are and what they like. You don't really get to know them at all. Because this book is only one of a number in "The Party Fairies" series, which itself is part of a bigger series, it seems that this story is more like a chapter in a bigger book than a book itself. If all the books were linked together, rather than standing alone, I feel like a lot of the missing details would be found. Standing alone, the book isn't that great. Reviewer: Melissa Rife
