Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz
Polo's second wordless adventure begins before the title page, with the selection, sending, and delivery of a gift book, which the delighted anthropomorphic dog begins to read in bed. While he sleeps, a strange circular creature climbs down on a string into his room and steals his precious book. Polo immediately climbs up the string in pursuit. From his fall down into a mass of pink cotton candy on, the graphic-design depiction of his chase fills the subsequent seventy-odd pages with scenes of humor and imaginative characters and places. There is a sort of circus, a strange castle that swallows and then expels Polo and his penguin companion. Then Polo travels overseas, with a chicken along, to a tropical island, aloft to a desert and a genie, up a beanstalk to clouds, and a final celebration complete with fireworks. He ends his dreaming adventure back in bed with "My book!" tucked under his arm. The comic book-like page design with different size boxes containing most of the action comfortably houses the inventive characters and settings. Black line cartoony drawings have color added for details or to reinforce the emotional content. It is a wild and funny visual trip.
Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
Books are wonderful gifts, but few would go to the same effort to recover a stolen book as plucky, ingenious Polo does here. In this wordless sequel to The Adventures of Polo, the long-eared pup receives a book by stork delivery, only to have it stolen by a little yellow alien. Off Polo goes in pursuit. Along the way to its rescue, his adventures include a tumble into a pink cotton-candy mountain, a trip through a looking glass, journeys through a picture constructed of unwinding yarn, a voyage in a hot-air balloon, a sojourn on a tropical island, an encounter with a genie released from a shattered bottle, a cloud-ball fight with a piggy princess, and much more. Literary allusions abound—to Alice, Harold with his purple crayon, Aladdin, Jack and his beanstalk, all adding to the fun. The closing spread, in which Polo is reconciled with the band of book-loving aliens, and reunited with all the various characters he has met along the way, is a visual feast, with abundant, delightful details to engage careful viewers. Polo's pluck, and charm, never fail.

Polo, the irrepressible and resourceful pooch readers first met in The Adventures of Polo (Roaring Brook, 2006), returns when a little alien steals his new book. He gives chase up strings, down ladders, through a fun-house mirror, in the air, and-well, wherever Faller's fertile imagination takes the little canine. Equipped only with his backpack and dogged determination, Polo follows the thief through graphic-novel-style wordless panels from one fantastic series of improbable adventures to another. Along the way he makes friends, effects rescues, and dodges danger in unexpected ways that will delight readers and confound expectations. Never at a loss in any crisis, the pup pulls from his backpack full banquets, a tuba, rope, and any number of items to help him overcome sticky situations. The chase's conclusion is satisfying, and all of the characters join Polo at his home for a grand celebration. The uncluttered, bright art has plenty of child appeal. Young readers will return often to pore over and revel in Polo's imaginative exploits.

Kirkus Reviews
The resourceful flop-eared pup with the bottomless backpack, introduced in The Adventures of Polo (2006), sets out on a new odyssey when a stick-limbed, pea-like interloper scampers off with his bedtime reading. Without words and with exquisite comic timing, Faller propels his determined pursuer headlong on a merry chase across "lands" of cloud, snow, sand and cotton candy, across seas, through a mirror, on flights by balloon and kite. Along the way, Polo acquires a penguin and other traveling companions, meets a princess and a genie and escapes one predicament after another-usually by entirely improbable means. Catching up at last, he sees the "thief" putting its swag to good use with an audience of rapt listeners, and shepherds the lot back to his floating home, where all (plus some characters from the previous outing) gather beneath the stars for snacks and fireworks. Illustrated with bright, clear colors and narrated in comic strip-style panels, this roller coaster ride is an unalloyed delight. Are there more episodes to come? Let's hope so.
