Editorial Reviews

The incentives for plastic recycling include ecological reasons, consumer demand, recycle-content legislation, and lower cost; until recently, these incentives had to be weighed against variable material composition, possibility of contamination, loss of mechanical properties due to degradation, lack of standards, and variations in supply. Now, many of these problems have been solved through such measures as the use of sophisticated automated sorting, restabilization, implementation of recyclate quality standards, and integrated collection networks. This volume describes technological advances in polymer recycling from the sorting stage through to recycling processes and end-use applications. In particular, it emphasizes the recycling of automobile tires, polyurethane foams, carpets, engineering plastics and fiber-reinforced composites, all of which had been previously thought to be hard to recycle.
