Though using multiple drugs has long been controversial in medicine as a whole, it has been gaining popularity in psychiatry. Researchers, instructors, and practitioners in the field, mostly from Boston-area hospitals, offer a broad view of the practice, from the historical roots of conventional medicine's antipathy, to the psychopharmacological revolution and the rebirth of polypharmacy in psychiatry. Briefly the story is that in the 19th century, practitioners of all sorts would prescribe drugs profligately without much scientific foundation and usually to little effect. Psychiatry missed the reaction against the practice because it had been led away from physical explanations of mental disease by Freud, and so comes again to polypharmacy without a history of opposition.
