Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Juan Ponce De Leon first arrived in the New World as a soldier serving under the command of Christopher Columbus. Earlier, young Juan had served as a warrior who fought against the Moors in Spain. Seeking fame, adventure, and riches Juan went on a voyage of discovery. What Ponce De Leon was to find in the new Spanish colonies was a world of contrasts. The natives were people who fascinated Juan. Yet, the coming of the Spaniards virtually destroyed the culture of those native tribes. Eventually, as Juan's abilities came to the forefront, he was charged with command of an exploration into what we now know to be Florida. There, among other things, Ponce De Leon was charged with finding the legendary "Fountain of Youth." Of course, Ponce De Leon never achieved that goal. However, he did successfully stake claim to new territories for his sovereigns. Years later Ponce De Leon was mortally wounded in another excursion into new territories. The story of this fascinating explorer is well told in this illustrated biography. As part of the "Exploring the World" series this volume is a fine introduction to the colorful life of one man who sought adventure during the classical age of exploration. 2002, Compass Point, Romaneck
