Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Tidwell presents his memoir of a two-year sojourn as a Peace Corps worker among a remote tribe in Zaire. (May)
Library Journal
Tidwell worked as a Peace Corps volunteer for two years in Kalambayi, a remote chiefdom in central Zaire. While teaching the local cotton farmers to raise fish for additional income and protein, he learned many lessons about survival and generosity of spirit. In one key scene, Tidwell struggles to comprehend why the first successful fish farmer gave away most of his harvest to other villagers, even those who had mocked his efforts. Finally Tidwell sees that sharing is the key to survival in this impoverished land. This book is full of interesting people, tragedy and humor, and insights into a culture very different from our own. Recommended for public and academic libraries.-- Beth Clewis, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community Coll. Lib., Richmond, Va.
School Library Journal
YA-- Poor, rural Zaire is the setting for this interesting autobiography of a man who spent two years there as a Peace Corps volunteer. Readers are sure to have culture shock as Tidwell shares his experiences in training, friendships, disease, civil war, superstition, pain, ignorance, and heartaches. His style is easy to read and attention-holding, and the book develops logically. Tidwell comes to life as he learns from and discusses his mistakes and his successes. However, with just a few exceptions, the Africans tend to meld together into one personality. Still, this is an excellent choice for geography students who want to learn of a completely different culture and for YAs considering service in the Peace Corps.-- Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA

    An Incredible Book

Discovering a great book is such a thrill and 'The Ponds of Kalambayi' came as a delightful surprise to me. Tidwell writes with fascinating insight and an easy to read style. My mother just finished his 'In The Mountains of Heaven' during her vacation here and thought it was wonderful, too. Of all the adventure/travelogues I have read, this one is right at the top.
