Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Young riders with an interest in joining a pony club will appreciate the detailed information presented. First, they will discover that owning a pony is not necessary for membership. Those with their own animals will learn about transport with horse trailers and trucks. The parts of a horse are shown with a clearly labeled picture. Helpful directions are given for leading a pony and approaching a strange pony. Suggestions for improving riding include riding without stirrups, riding without reins, exercises in the saddle, and lying back on the horse. Riders learn to ride separately and in pairs. Summer camp experiences include group classes, riding, aftercare, and cleaning the tack. A variety of competitions and team games are described. Photographs of young riders (almost all female) illustrate each topic and contribute to understanding. A page of "Notes for Parents and Teachers" provides background material, suggestions for working with ponies and children, and a list of websites. Includes a table of contents, a glossary, and an index. Part of the "I Love Ponies" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
School Library Journal
Gr 2–5—These serviceable, well-organized volumes offer basic information about horseback riding in an appealing format. All contain clear and colorful photos of mostly female riders with their horses and ponies. In Show, the importance of preparation is emphasized and classes from leadline to dressage and eventing are discussed. Ride explains the various components of riding from mounting and dismounting to galloping and jumping and includes helpful hints about concerns such as checking the girth. Western-style riding is also briefly covered. Pony Club provides a clear look at attending meetings, improving riding skills, and other areas of interest to young enthusiasts, with an emphasis on caring for horses. This title also explores camping, competition, and team games. Whether browsing the engaging photos or searching for some helpful hints, budding equestrians will find some interesting and useful information here.—Carol Schene, formerly at Taunton Public Schools, MA
