More a walking bouffant than a dog, the pampered, penthouse-dwelling and distinctly pink Poodlena Pompadour devotes her days to grooming-"teasing her fabulous fluff-Shaving legs, painting toenails and other such stuff." Witty full-bleed paintings and time-lapse spot illustrations chronicle an elaborate regimen (including a spray application of pink dye) performed by the poodle's bald owner, who looks like something of a dandy despite his paunchy build. But while pictures show the owner's hands at work, the text declares Poodlena the mistress of her fate: "She'd fuss and she'd tweeze,/ She'd paint and she'd fluff." Only late in the day does she venture out "for the park/ for the dog time to play," as the first-time author/artist awkwardly writes; unsurprisingly, Poodlena "want[s] just to be seen." But one day Poodlena slips into the mud of the rain-soaked park and has a revelation: she'll be happier if she "fluffs a bit less/ And makes more time to play." In an abrupt ending, the rotund gentleman accommodates Poodlena's newfound desire to "chase balls on the green/ And get dirty till dark." Because the author keeps her characters at arm's length, the dog's change of heart is visually shortchanged as well; it's almost as if a spread is missing. Children's Literature
In her first picture book, McHenry makes a point and has fun with a high-class pink poodle as the main character. The poodle, Poodlena Pompadour, spends her days primping in an attempt to be pretty and perfect. Readers walk through text pages devoted to the actual grooming and learn that the effort takes place so Poodlena can strut at the park during daily dog time. Being so clean, she never enters into games of the other dogs. Her beauty could be threatened by such dog activity as chasing other dogs and chasing after balls. However, when one doozy of a rainstorm hits the city, what had been a green area for the dogs to play in becomes a quagmire of mud described as a "moat." All efforts to be pretty vanish when another dog runs into Poodlena who flies into the air and lands smack dab in the mud. The muddy Poodlena joins the antics of the other dogs. This life-changing event pushes "play" into her schedule. From then on she still primps, but a bit less, and she makes the most of playtime in the park. The text is written in simple rhyme with only a few lines per page. Some of the verse is a bit contrived, but children will most likely be delighted with the singsong words. McHenry's illustrations dazzle and entertain. As both artist and illustrator she has offered a complete package worth reading. 2004, Bloomsbury Children's Books, Ages 4 to 8.

    This is our girl's new favorite book!

    I was very pleased with this book, and even went online to find the boardbook edition for our toddler. Being a girly-girl is all well and good, spending time primping in front of a mirror is just something girls are generally taught. This book shows that you can still be a lady and have fun getting dirty and make new friends without being prissy all the time. Children these days have forgotten what it was like to live in a neighborhood where it was safe for all the kids to meet at the local playground and have fun just being a kid, learning social skills from an early age. Children of this generation are so isolated with their computers and televisions in their own rooms that they are socially retarded until they start school. I am 100% for the message in this wonderful, colorful, well thought out story!

    A Lesson for Life Book

    This adorable book shows the pampered & perfect poodle with the seemingly charmed life and all she goes through to maintain her image of pink & pouffy perfection. When her encounter with a muddy mutt turns her perfect world literally upside down in the mud, she realized what she was missing & learns that she need not maintain that look of perfection to be happy & have great fun & even allows herself to get dirty on a regular basis!

    FOR YOUR LITTLE PRINCESS

    Beautifully written and illustrated, this is one of the best picture books for little girls. My daughter is not in the age range for this book (she's eight) but she was given a poodle puppy along with this book and she adored it. I recommend this book for ALL little girls with pets.

    A great book for the diva in your daughter!

    This book is one of my daughter's favorites. She is only 2, but is very into make-up and her hair...yikes! She relates to Poodlena and her primping. Very sweet and totally girly book!

    Poodlena is so happy with herself all perfectly made up until fate shows her a different side of herself; that she can also have fun and still enjoy being beautiful. A truly wonderfully illustrated book with a great story.

    Poodlena

    Poodlena is so happy with herself being beautiful and perfectly made up until fate steps in and she finds out that she can have fun with her life chasing balls in the yard and be beautiful at the same time.
