Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
For those who may not understand why Martha speaks there is a one page recap explaining how it all happened in comic book style. This particular story is based on a TV program by Melissa Stephenson and Raye Lankford which in turn is based on the original story about Martha by Susan Meddaugh. Today the kids have gathered at the pool and they have been clever enough to coat the cards with plastic so they can use them in the pool. One of their friends, Alice, arrives late. She seems to be a fanatic about putting on sunscreen and does it several times during the day. About halfway through the day, the kids are quite surprised to see that Alice is a different color. She has turned orange. Off she races home only to learn that she has used too much of an ointment used to color your skin and not a sun screen. Like most kids that age, great angst and the refusal to go to Tiffany's pool party looking like a giant orange follow. Her friends try lots of solutions to get the color off, but nothing works. Martha then comes up with a clever solution and all ends well. The illustrations are contemporary and show that Alice has a real assortment of loyal friends. The back cover contains a simple activity and kids are encouraged to visit two Internet sites to learn more about Martha. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
