The scrawny, supercilious feline from Bad Kittyis back and-quel surprise!-has no interest in playing with guileless, gangly Puppy, who appeared at the end of that title and takes center stage here. "Poor Puppy," Bruel writes. "Poor, poor Puppy. Poor, poor, poor, poor, poor Puppy!" The book then becomes a counting/alphabet book to demonstrate that Puppy isn't really poor-in fact he has many playthings at his disposal: "1 Airplane, 2 Balls, 3 Cars" and so on. But Puppy still wants to play with Kitty, and as he falls asleep, the book takes another trip through the alphabet-and through the world-as Puppy dreams of 26 fun activities and locales he'd like to share with his "best friend" Kitty: "Apple Bobbing in Antarctica, Baseball in Brazil, Checkers in Canada," etc. Unfortunately, Bruel's usually sharp sense of humor is not as evident in this sequel. The alphabet-driven catalogues of Bad Kittywere funny because they pushed the boundaries of probability when it came to Kitty's sociopathic tendencies, her favorite foods and her equally hyperbolic acts of redemption. But despite Bruel's colorful visual treatment of the physical activity here, the vignettes often feel inert. Even the wittiest moments-such as Puppy and Kitty playing Patty-cake in Peru-may generate fewer laughs than Kitty's previous comedic nefariousness. Bad Kitty fans will want to take note of a new "cat-nipped" edition of that title (with a pair of large bite marks, courtesy of Kitty), due out the same month. Ages 4-up. (Aug.)

The cat from Bruel's Bad Kitty (Roaring Brook, 2005) plays an important supporting role to a puppy in this counting and alphabet book. When the feline doesn't want to play with the energetic pup, he opts to entertain himself with an assortment of toys. The curious little fellow explores one airplane, two balls, three cars, four dolls, etc. Each number corresponds with objects chosen to match the numerical order of the letters of the alphabet, all set within cartoon-style panels ablaze with color. As the cat keeps an eye on what the dog is up to, it sometimes unintentionally winds up as part of the action. When puppy wears out from counting through the alphabet and beds down for nap, his dream transports him on an alphabetical trip around the world. He plays baseball in Brazil, quoits in Qatar, and yodels in Yemen. Teachers will find many curricular uses for this lively, multifaceted romp.

I am a cat owner who got this book for my 2 year old granddaughter who loves dogs. We both enjoyed the book, but I think I liked it even more than she did!

Those who have read Bad Kitty have to read Poor Puppy. Like Bad Kitty is teaches kids the alphabet but this time introduces them to numbers to. The illustrations are hilarious especially after puppy finds the forgotten cat toys under the couch. Kitty follows him around because there is one toy that kitty wants and puppy has it.
When puppy gets tired he takes a nap, with the cat toy! When he naps he dreams, and not just about anything, he dreams of playing with kitty. Like 'kickball in Kenya' and 'jump rope in Japan'.
This book is great and definite must have.

This book is a real eye catcher! It keeps the child interested while focusing on counting and the alphabet. My four year old just loves it and wants me to re-read it a million times!
