—Pietra Rivoli, author of The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy

"Paul Midler takes us for a ride through the fastest-growing economy in the world, revealing what can—and sometimes does—go wrong when U.S. companies shift production to China. Working in the heart of China's export hub, in the country's southern region, he has the advantage of a front-row seat to the no-holds-barred games played between manufacturers and importers. He introduces us to a cast of real-life characters and tells his story with a mix of affection and skepticism for what is taking place in China today. Midler delivers a revealing and often funny tale of life and commerce in a country whose exports touch nearly everyone on the planet."
—Sara Bongiorni, author of A Year Without 'Made in China'

Watch out for "Made in China" labels.

Midler's experience with the Chinese side of business sheds light to the malpractices and issues revolving around the relationship between factory owners and importers. We get to see what so-called "quality control" of the production line as well as how foreign importers are at the mercy of the producers. The style of the book makes it easy to follow, and Midler's work makes sense even to those who are unfamiliar with the subject of business and economy. In short, be careful about what comes from China.

A must-read for anyone interested in Chinese importing/manufacturing

What a fun read! I read this book in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed Midler's perspectives.

I have a couple commonalities with Midler, which made this book particularly relevant to me. First of all, I am an importer. I started importing in 2004, right out of undergrad, and built a fairly large business in the United States over the last 6 years. I couldn't help but laugh at some of his experiences because I have often shared nearly identical tales of manufacturing mishaps over the years. I often have people ask me about starting a business importing from China, and this is going to be a book I recommend to these individuals. It is spot on (although I admittedly would have done a few things different with King Chemical - one of the suppliers in the book, and feel his perspective is a little on the cynical side).

The other shared experience I have with Midler is that I am a current a MBA/MA student at Wharton and the Lauder Institute (where he completed his MBA/MA - only my emphasis is Spanish/Latin America). I heard about his book through someone at Wharton, and Midler's experience coupled with his education in East Asia added enough credibility in my eyes to warrant a purchase of his book.

Well done Midler. This book is fun, insightful and is a value add to anyone interested in manufacturing abroad.

Changed my thinking about China ruling the world

This book is an easy read. I chose it because I was concerned about all the "hype" about being indebted to China. It is just one man's opinion and maybe a limited point of view, but it made me feel better. We need to learn more about China's business culture before we start comparing it with ours.
