Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
This chunky, little—six by eight by almost two inches—pop-up book is much too complex and elegant for pre-school children. True, the book contains the familiar words and images of fifteen well-known verses for the very young, but its dazzling movements and sophisticated illustrations would be wasted on children too young to understand or appreciate its artistry, nor would their little fingers have the patience to return small folded parts back into their places. Each of the five double page spreads contains three different nursery rhymes with one of them on each page given an extra-large, multi-layered pop-up and the remaining two having smaller combination pop-up and lift-the-flap presentations. The feature rhymes are "Hey Diddle, Diddle," "Humpty Dumpty," "I'm a Little Teapot," "The Itsy Bitsy Spider," and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." Of these the "Itsy, Bitsy Spider" has the largest pop-up, and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" is the most amazing with stars twinkling outside a bedroom window. All ten of the smaller pop-ups are just as awesome, only smaller. Older children and adults will be enchanted all over again with this very special book of nursery rhymes. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
Publishers Weekly
The small format of Reinhart’s latest pop-up book belies the number of classic nursery rhymes he packs inside. A pop-up Humpty Dumpty falls from a red brick wall (and begins to crack up) as his spread opens, while smaller flaps to the side open to reveal the garden of “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary,” as well as a cake marked with a “B” for “Pat-a-Cake.” Additional spreads feature three rhymes each; in perhaps the most dramatic pop-up, a more cute-than-scary “Itsy Bitsy Spider” rides on a wave of water gushing from a towering waterspout. Ingenious details abound—the thoughtfulness put into every movement is evident. Ages 3–up. (Sept.)
