It's one thing to read about what frightens you. Now imagine seeing it—a dentist, perhaps, with drill extended—made real in 3-D. Ooooh, scary. But funny too, which is the point of these cleverly conceived, brilliantly executed displays of neurotic horrors.

Balvis Rubess's illustrations are appropriately sinister (no fuzzy caterpillars here), and Matthew Reinhart, a paper sculptor, is clearly at the cutting edge of pop-up technology: An airplane tray table comes loose as an oxygen mask drops down and the farmlands outside the window start to spin (aerophobia, fear of flying); you look up from the bottom of a grave at a shoveful of dirt about to land on your face (necrophobia, fear of death). Meet the Author

Gary Greenberg is a nationally touring stand-up comedian and writer. He has appeared on Comedy Central and the USA Network, and has written segments for The Daily Show and the sketch group The Associates. His first book,Self-Helpless, was published in March 1999. He currently resides in Manhattan with his wife, Jeanne, and their phobias.

Balvis Rubess is an illustrator who has worked with Yahoo, the Chicago Tribune, the Detroit Free Press, McDonald's, Coke, Pepsi, Nestle, and many others. He lives in Toronto with his wife, Jody, and has recently entered counseling for phobophobia.

Matthew Reinhart is a paper sculptor and modelmaker who has created three-dimensional work for Nickelodeon's hit show Blue's Clues and for Scholastic and Simon & Schuster. He lives in New York City, where he is a partner in Librum Artifex.

    Loved it!

    I loved this book. I used it for an "informative presentation" I had to do for my public speaking class in college. We had to use some sort of visual aid & I didn't know what topic to choose. So I figure, why not phobias. So I googled Phobias and saw this book. It really helped with my presentation and I had a good time presenting it even though I hate public speaking. The funny thing is that one of the phobias in the book is "glossophobia" (fear of public speaking). I think its great for any age (maybe not too young!) but definitely worth a look and it would make a great addition to any coffee table book collection.

    Pop-up Book of Phobias

    This was a gift for a couple in the mental health field. I watched as they opened it and went through the pages. They really enjoyed it and thought it would be a perfect coffee table book. The pop-ups were inventive, and the phobias are classics. It was a perfect companion to the other gift I gave them, the Pop-up Book of Nightmares.

    ALL HAIL THIS GREAT BOOK!

    This book was so funny, it makes a perfect Chistmas gift too. The pop-ups are so cute! :) It's a must have for all of your friends and family!

    Good Book

    I read this book when I was looking through piles of strange gizmos and things at a Pacific Sunwear in NYC, and I thought it was pretty neat. The artwork is pretty scary, but the information is very interesting. It gives factual information about the most common phobias. If you dont buy it find it some time and read it because you may be intrigued.

    FEAR THIS BOOK!

    Absolutely brilliant. I stumbled across this gem on a tip from Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America. You can count on feeling woozy with laughter or from recognition of your phobia! Mr. Greenberg, et al.,have crafted a witty, nicely-illustrated and superbly-designed treasure of a book. The well-engineered pop-ups range from the quite elaborate to the very simple--with equal, yet remarkable, effectiveness. I highly recommend it for anyone with or without phobias, in fact I've sent it to a couple of neurosis-laden friends, already. Kudos to the authors (and thanks!).
