Overview

"Make me an instrument of your peace..." St. Francis of Assisi

When the curtains were drawn and our new Holy Father stepped out into view of the 150,000 people waiting in St. Peter's Square, it was a humble and gentle man from Argentina who greeted them, not in triumph, but with a gentle wave.

He's a pope of "firsts" - the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas, and the first to choose the name of Italy's most famous saint.

  • He is the son of an immigrant railway worker, and sibling of four.
  • He was an active, social young man who trained to be a chemist before pursuing a religious vocation.
  • He is a Jesuit priest and beloved spiritual director who even as archbishop of Buenos Aires was referred to as Father Jorge.
  • He is an outspoken leader who experienced firsthand the challenges of a society ravaged by war, economic despair and cultural unrest.

Pope Francis is still new to us, but in this biography you will get to know the man who became pope: A street priest at heart with a deep love for people and a pastor's touch. He teaches in word and deed the truths of the Church and God's merciful love.

Get inside access to the entire history-making event, from the startling resignation of Pope Benedict through the gathering of Cardinals for the Conclave and the installation of this Pope of the people.

Examine Pope Francis the man - his background, his ideas, his mission, and his challenges and opportunities as our new pope - including 16 pages of full color photos from Pope Francis' past and present.

"I want to ask you to walk together, and take care of one another …We need to see the light of hope and to be men and women who bring hope to others." Pope Francis

Prior to his election as Pope Francis, I did not know Cardinal B

Prior to his election as Pope Francis, I did not know Cardinal Bergoglio. Dr. Matthew Bunson's book was an excellent introduction about his life, ministry, and the state of the Church he inherits after his election.
In particular, I appreciated that Dr. Bunson set the context of the election and the unexpected impact of the resignation of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Here's an interesting quote:
"Pope Francis, picking up where Pope Benedict left off, has already begun to chart a course forward with his firm adherence to orthodoxy matched by a committed, self-sacrificing love for and compassion toward all people, especially the poor and broken. These are critical ingredients if the New Evangelization is to gain ground."
I read George Wiegel's biography of Pope John Paul II and I think Pope Francis is a lighter, more approachable book. However, it did not sacrifice substance for brevity. I appreciated the specifics on Liberation Theology and Cardinal Bergoglio’s role in Argentina’s Dirty War. Dr. Bunson spent the final chapter focused on three challenge areas for the Church – modernity and the New Evangelization, Reform and Renewal, and the impact of global Catholicism.
I also liked a couple of simple additions: the list of all popes and a brilliant glossary of Church jargon such as Consistory and Motu Proprio.
It is a book for not only faithful Catholics, but those who have fallen away or others who want to learn more about what appears to be a humble and gentle man, Pope Francis.

    Great Conclave Information

This book gives a great account of what really happened when Pope Benedict resigned. It seemed honest and detailed. Difficult subject matter was addressed in a straight forward manner. This also gives a good insite into the personality of Pope Francis. If you are interested in the history of Catholic Popes then this book is for you.
