Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Lisa Martincik
Although comic book anthologies have traditionally proven to be a tough sell, this "graphic mixtape" has survived to see a second volume. Like the first, this book contains more than fifty stories by dozens of creators from the well known to the relatively new. Content is all over the map, from the hip and retro-looking Afrodisiac by Brian Maruca and Jim Rugg, about a sexy race of would-be invaders who meet their match in one cool dude, to the wordless interstellar tragic love story of Lady in Space by Ancor Gil and Gisela Marrero to a new installment of Sanz Pantz, Ninja Platypus, All-U-Can-Eat Beatdown! by Chris Moreno and Thomas Mauer. With something for everyone if one looks hard enough, this collection is a lot of book with a bewildering variety of content. Although lacking thematic consistency, the short stories share the commonality of striking visuals, which often carry the bulk of the storytelling; in some cases the narrative is sketchy or (purposely) almost absent. As if to make up for the threat of graphical dominance, the stories with few exceptions are tales of the strange. Three entries involve entirely real-world, plausible concerns (such as the wonders of New York City or the fear of contracting an STD from a loved one). The rest involve monsters and aliens and robots and little talking bugs. Readers looking for a sedate or easy read may encounter whiplash bouncing from style to style and idea to idea, but the sheer amount of content leaves room for nearly every shade of emotion and genre.
