To the delight of young readers everywhere, Newbery medalist Cynthia Rylant has just published Book 4 in the open-ended Poppleton series. Again we find Poppleton the pig surrounded by a community of animal friends helping him solve a series of problems. First, Poppleton discovers a sick tree and all of his neighbors suggest unique ways to help the tree become healthy once again. Then Poppleton himself become sick and his neighbor Cherry Sue brings him a sure cure for his cold, a bowl filled with ten oranges. Poppleton's encounter with the bowl of oranges is hilarious. Comical results also follow Poppleton's attempt to hang wallpaper with his friends, Hudson, a three-inch mouse, Fillmore the goat, and Cherry Sue, the llama. Mark Teague's colorful and life-like illustrations enhance the story and add to the young reader's enjoyment of Poppleton's latest escapades.

K-Gr 2-This is the fourth book about this lovable pig. In the first chapter, Poppleton's small tree seems to be withering. Hudson the mouse suggests feeding it cheese, but it is Cherry Sue the llama who comes up with the idea of a bird feeder, which is just what the lonely tree needs. In the second episode, poor Poppleton is fighting off a cold. Cherry Sue comes by with a basket of oranges. Unfortunately, every time he gets one peeled, he sneezes, and it flies all over the room. In the final selection, Poppleton is wallpapering his house. Hudson proves to be too small to be of much help, Fillmore the goat keeps eating the paper, and Cherry Sue's fur gets caught in the paste. When his friends offer to change themselves in order to be more helpful, Poppleton realizes how special they are and switches to paint-which is much easier for everyone. Rylant's text is simple, and the layout of only one or two sentences per page, plus the separate chapters, make the book easy to read. These qualities also make it a good read-aloud choice. Teague's warm and funny illustrations capture the spirit of Poppleton and his companions wonderfully. A great addition to any collection.-Dina Sherman, Brooklyn Children's Museum, NY
