The quality of kitchen cabinets and fixtures varies enormously, but every well-designed kitchen should incorporate the following features:
A labor-saving layout
Preparing meals becomes tiresome unless the facilities for cooking, food preparation and washing up are grouped in a layout that avoids unnecessary movement. To use designer's parlance, the kitchen must form an efficient work triangle. In ideal conditions, the sides of the triangle combined should not exceed 20 to 22 feet in length.
When you are building storage into a kitchen, workshop, bedroom or living room, make sure every item is within easy reach and that there is room to open drawers and doors without backing into a wall or injuring others.
Storage and appliances
If the work triangle is to be effective a kitchen must incorporate enough storage space in each area. The refrigerator and food stuffs should be close to where meals are prepared, and adequate work surfaces must be provided. A freezer could be housed elsewhere but should be somewhere close to the kitchen.
The cooktop and oven should be grouped together with heat-proof surfaces nearby to receive hot dishes. Cooking utensils should be stored within easy reach.
Appliances that require plumbing are best grouped together, with the sink on an outside wall. In a small house, this area will contain a washing machine and tumble dryer, although a separate laundry room is an ideal solution.
