Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up-This volume introduces 65 writers of nonfiction, such as Seymour Simon, Laurence Pringle, Bruce McMillan, Kathryn Lasky, Gail Gibbons, James Cross Giblin, Franklyn Branley, Jean Fritz, and Aliki. The criteria for inclusion requires that individuals are living and have more than one informational book currently in print. The fields of folklore, poetry, and drama are not included. The two-to-three page entries begin with headings that provide birthdays and addresses and a black-and-white photo, followed by biographical essays that discuss the authors' early lives and careers. Each subject has provided a "Message to Students" that ranges in length from one sentence to half a page and generally encourage youngsters to read, write, and think. The annotated bibliographies include several of the featured writers' books. In addition to the author/title index, a subject index lists the authors under specific topics, e.g., "Frontier and Pioneer Life," "Pets," and "African Americans." Although the preface states that the essays are primarily for teachers, they are accessible and interesting to children as well. This book will be a useful addition to collections that are heavily used for author studies. Although this information is available in sources such as Something about the Author (Gale), this title offers an inexpensive alternative.-Priscilla Bennett, State University of West Georgia
