Library Journal
A compilation of material that originally appeared in Popular Woodworking magazine or in books published by PW, this book spans a range of subjects: the workshops of well-known woodworkers, materials, sharpening, tools, joinery, shelving and cabinetry, and finishing. Although billed as "the ultimate encyclopedia of woodworking," it doesn't come close to being comprehensive. Only one page is devoted to workbenches, and there is no coverage of scroll saws or lathes. Yet four pages are devoted to cryogenically treating tools, an expensive and rarely used process that may increase their durability. Although well written and illustrated with attractive color photos, the entries do not cite where or when they were originally published, so readers can't evaluate the information's currency or follow up for further information. Not recommended. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
