Children's Literature
Why do we measure? This book is written for the early intervention level 6 reader and is simple and easy to follow and understand, making it helpful for the young reader to learn and understand different types of measurement. The book explains that people take measurements and use different measuring tools to determine height, length, distance, speed, weight, volume and size. There is one image per type of measurement activity (for example, a doctor measuring a child's height) and, in most instances, a clear image of the measuring tool. This title would be a helpful resource in the classroom. The final page asks this question of the reader, "What can you measure?" sparking a dialogue between the children and their teacher. It also contains a helpful glossary/index for children to further understand the meanings of the words discussed in the book. Spanish language consultants Jesus Cervantes and Anita Constantino assisted in preparing this title. 2005 (orig. 1963), Yellow Umbrella Books/Capstone Press, Ages 5 to 8.
