Portfolios have been used in adult education both as a technique to assess returning students' experiential learning for academic credit and to encourage students to explore their own values and priorities and gain a clearer understanding of themselves and the world. Portfolio development has fallen out of fashion in adult education, however, as business-conscious schools focus on other kinds of skill measurement in a difficult job market. Editors Michelson (cultural studies, Empire State College) and Mandell (social sciences, Empire State College) make a case for the continued use of student portfolios in prior learning assessment, presenting 12 models for how the technique has been adapted at community colleges and four-year schools in the US, UK, Australia, and South Africa.
